Finnish alcoholic beverage company Altia has been awarded at The Drinks Business Green Awards 2018 in London for the environmental practices at its Koskenkorva factory.

The annual awards are organised by The Drinks Business magazine and recognise the most ethical and environmentally friendly alcoholic beverage companies around the world.

Altia

was awarded “due to the bio and circular economy employed at its Koskenkorva distillery in Finland”, where 100 per cent of its grains are utilised. Even the husk is burnt to fuel the factory’s own bio power plant, the resulting ash used as fertiliser and C02 emissions for greenhouse cultivation.

“We are very happy to win the Green Company of the Year title,” saidHannamari Koivula, corporate responsibility manager at Altia. “It’s a big deal for Altia that we received this notable recognition for our long-term responsible practices and that years of environmental work especially at the Koskenkorva factory are acknowledged internationally as well.”

Since 2014, the bio power plant has cut down CO2 emissions at the factory by more than 50 per cent and significantly increased its energy efficiency. Altia has also taken steps to protect the groundwater it uses for production and put a strong focus on recycling.
