The EU Horizon 2020 programme has granted five million euros in funding for a consortium to develop a power take-off (PTO) unit for a 1MW wave energy device.

Commencing in May, the three-year MegaRoller project will see the 1MW PTO unit designed, built and tested at the AW-Energy research centre in Finland.

“Reliability and quality have been at the centre of WaveRoller development,” says AW-Energy product quality and certification manager Tuula Mäki. “Now we are preparing to build on these solid foundations to extend the rating to 1MW with a team of world-class expertise across Europe.”

The project is coordinated by Finnish company Hydroll and includes the participation of VTT, ABB Finland, and companies and research institutes from Portugal, Germany and Norway.

“We are mobilising the latest technology from other engineering disciplines and even neurosciences,” states AW-Energy CTO Jussi Åkerberg. “In our view technology cross-overs will be an essential part of future innovations enabling sustainable growth. We anticipate that developments in machine learning and IoT will enable us to reach our goal of reducing the price of energy.”
