Finnish film to have a good showing in Singapore

The Finnish Film Festival is organised by the Finnish embassy together with Singapore Film Society and the Finnish Film Foundation.

Opening the festival will be Dome Karukoski’s film Tom of Finland, while Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki will have a retrospective of six films on show, ranging from 1985’s Calamari Union to 2011’s Le Havre.

The festival’s curator is Kenneth Tan, who deems Kaurismäki one of the world’s greatest directors and, in a release, says he first became enamoured of Finnish film two decades ago at the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä, Finland.

The festival also features Marja Pyykkö’s Man and Baby (Yösyöttö), which was awarded Best Nordic Feature in New York last year, Simo Halinen’s drama East ofSweden (Kääntöpiste), Jussi Hiltunen’s The Law of the Land (ArmotonMaa), which won him a directorial debut award in St. Petersburg, and TeemuNiikki’s much-lauded Euthanizer (Armomurhaaja).

Family-friendly screenings will include Ira Carpelan and Jakub Wronski’s Moomins and the Winter Wonderland (Muumien Taikatalvi), Joona Tena’s recently awarded Super Furball (Supermarsu), as well as Saara Cantell’s Jill, Joy and the Mysterious Stranger (Onneli, Anneli ja salaperäinen muukalainen).
