Finnish firms rise to challenges worldwide

Fortum eNext, the power plant services brand of Fortum, has been selected to carry out a boiler refurbishment project at a power plant in Plzeň, the Czech Republic, to help the plant to meet European NOx emission norms. The contract is with Plzeňská Energetika and the design phase is already underway, with the project handover expected in early 2020.

Then on to KONE, which will equip the Global Trade Center near the central business district of Nairobi, Kenya, with a total of 49 lifts and a KONE Destination Control System. At a height of 185 metres, the mixed-use high-rise development will be among the tallest buildings in East Africa and include a 42-storey office tower, commercial podium, four residential towers and a 35-storey luxury hotel.

Alternative fuels and automation

Next in line is Wärtsilä, which has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Finland’s Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) for developing a technically and commercially viable solution for the use of alternative fuels using its generating sets.

NPPD is the largest electricity utility in the US state of Nebraska, where the aim is to proceed with an industrial-scale pilot project on the use of synthesised methanol, dimethyl ether (DME) and ammonia as fuel and to produce electricity using Wärtsilä’s test engines.

Finally to Valmet, which will supply old corrugated container and containerboard making lines, as well as automation solutions, to Mondi SCP’s paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia. The start-up of the paper machine (PM19) is expected to take place towards the end of 2020.
