Huge shipbuilding deal in the works for Rauma
Finnish shipbuilding company Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) and Estonian shipping company Tallink Grupp have signed a letter of intent to build a new car and passenger ferry worth around 250 million euros.
The environmentally friendly ferry will be built at Rauma shipyard and take on a scheduled route between the Finnish capital Helsinki and the Estonian capital Tallinn once finished, at the end of 2021.
Planning of the Tallink shuttle ship will commence in the spring of 2019, with work set to start at Rauma shipyard in 2020. With a capacity of 2 800 passengers, the ferry is the largest new-build order for RMC to date and will have a significant effect on employment in the region.
“This is outstanding news for shipbuilding in Rauma,” says Jyrki Heinimaa, CEO of Rauma Marine Constructions. “RMC’s four-year journey has been consistent and the letter of intent with Tallink represents a natural continuation of our development. The order’s impact on employment will total around 1 500 person-years. We will hence recruit a significant amount of new talent to Rauma shipyard in the near future.”
The latest technology and innovative solutions will be utilised in the ship’s design in order to ensure the vessel is as energy-efficient and environmentally friendly as possible.
Tallink Grupp and Rauma Marine Constructions will finalise the contract and financial arrangements in the upcoming months.
