Marimekko and Plan campaign for equality

More than 62 million school-aged girls around the world miss out on education because of poverty and discrimination.Plan International

Finnish design brand Marimekko and humanitarian organisation Plan International are organising campaigns together to support children’s rights and education of girls in developing countries.

The collaboration marks the 50th anniversary of Marimekko’s iconic Tasaraita (even stripe) pattern, designed by Annika Rimala in 1968 to symbolise equality.

Marimekko and Plan International are campaigning in the spring from 1 April to 31 May, and in the autumn from 1 October to 31 December, in Marimekko stores in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the US, and Australia, as well as in Marimekko’s online store.

“We want to support Plan’s work in developing countries, especially girls’ rights and education, because they are in the most vulnerable position,” says Piia Kumpulainen, Marimekko’s communications director.

During the campaigns, Marimekko will donate one euro for every Tasaraita shirt bought to Plan International.

“When girls’ rights are realised, it advances the development of whole communities and eradicates poverty all over the world,” comments Ossi Heinänen, CEO of Plan International Finland. “Together with Marimekko we are doing effective and successful work to improve the living conditions and lives of girls.”
