Finnish paper and packaging manufacturer Stora Enso has won a contract with US tech giant Apple.

The news was reported by Bloomberg. Stora Enso and Apple both declined to comment on the details of the deal.

The deal is a significant boost for the Finnish company, as it has spent billions in recent years shifting from the declining paper business. With an increased focus on innovative wrappings made from tree and plant fibres, more than a third of Stora Enso’s sales now come from consumer board and packaging solutions.

Concurrently, Apple has shifted away from plastic packaging. Winning the contract gives Stora Enso access to a customer that sells approximately 75 million iPhones a quarter, all requiring packaging.

The three Stora Enso factories supplying Apple are based in China, where the majority of the US tech company’s products are assembled.
