Ramon Ibrahim, Nigeria. Digital transformation lead

“Remember, your net worth is your network.”

Ramon got admitted to a university in Finland to pursue his engineering degree and see what kind of opportunities lie ahead. Adjusting to the working culture here during his subsequent career hasn’t been without its cultural surprises: orderliness, titles not being a big deal, always dressing casually – mostly in tech organisations – and the respect of time and due diligence. And how does Ramon relax after a working week? Hanging out with friends or colleagues, eating and enjoying a cold beer.

1. How I got my current job is…

through a connection on LinkedIn. It has been great so far, and I look forward to exploring and experiencing my new career path. I am always open to new challenges.

2. If I could change one thing about Finnish working life it would be…

the process of getting a job: it is part of working life. So, I would want to make a more English working environment, bridging the gap between foreigners (job seekers) without the hassle of studying Finnish before getting employed. It’s not an easy task to relocate from another part of the world and blend the culture shock and, at the same time, learn a language you’ve never heard of just to get employed, as it is a major criterion when finding a job.

3. My favourite thing about Finland is…

that it is safe. Allow me to say that Finland is one of the safest places to live and raise a child in any part of the world. It is cold, and I like it for that as it is always fun going to sauna and skiing. And, of course, the summer cottage is great.

4. The piece of advice I would give to someone contemplating coming to work in Finland is…

come and be present, stay steadfast, keep striving and thriving, network as much as you can and keep engaging with your network. Remember, your net worth is your network.

5. The most influential Finn in my life is…Tarja Halonen

; she is one strong, chill and a distinct diplomatic person. She’s a role model, her governance was exceptional during her time as the president. The world needs more people like her.
